Andy Burnham was appointed Prime Minister of the United Kingdom in July 2026, a potentially controversial decision by the Labour Party after Keir Starmer resigned. Some people felt that giving the title to a man who was never elected by the general public was unjust; still, the general election chose Labour - no matter who leads them. Since his appointment, Andy Burnham has worked hard to win over the younger generation, confirming that children aged 15 and under are allowed to ride local buses for free across the whole of England and capping all single-ticket fares at two pounds starting in 2027. Burnham clearly believes the way to stay Prime Minister is by largely appealing to his younger or even future voter base more than any other political leader in the country at the moment.
Another way Burnham has done this is through social media. The Prime Minister has been active on all social platforms since his time in Number 10 started. Despite facing backlash from some who say he cares more about clicks than making real change, I would argue this move is a stroke of genius by Burnham. We are facing a major problem in the UK where the current generation doesn't seem to care about politics, despite the topic having such a big effect on them and their futures; young people feel as though the subject matter doesn't care and include them enough for it to be worth paying attention to. This is where Burnham's social media activity really becomes genius: by collaborating and featuring on some of the most popular social media pages, he is capturing the youth's attention and redirecting it back into politics! Not only that, but he is making the topic as a whole far more accessible, allowing anyone with internet access to gain credible information from the current sitting PM! By giving people an easier place to gather information, more people are bound to take an interest and get involved in politics, which is exactly what this generation needs. We see this trend in other popular world leaders such as Zohran Mamdani, who has won the heart of New Yorkers through his relatable and online approach to governing, which provides real-world change. When people see their leaders and politicians featuring and interacting on social media, especially as much as Mamdani and Burnham are, they feel as though their problems are more likely to be addressed and dealt with, giving them more incentive to speak out and be heard! The more people that get heard, the more change there will be - change that has been dictated and chosen by the people.
There are still obvious risks with social media; information is easy to clip and be taken out of context or morphed and distorted to send the wrong message. The owners of these platforms must enforce harsher blocks on misinformation to stop the spread of lies. However, the truth is, social media is very unlikely to go anywhere; it is something we all are going to have to work with and get used to as being part of our day-to-day lives, so it is more than right for our political leaders to do the same. Burnham does this expertly; he frequently posts videos talking about some of the most current issues in the most understandable and informative ways possible.
Andy Burnham isn't all talk either, and he isn't just for young people. He has started the "Number 10 North" programme, aimed at lessening the gap between the north and south that has unfortunately plagued the country for years. He wants to cut business rates for clubs, pubs and live music venues from April 2027, allowing independently owned and smaller venues to be able to afford to stay open and give space for smaller artists to thrive - something I feel very strongly about. He has also got a very strong approach to try to end rough sleeping in England, which would be backed by £340 million of government spending, which would support people for an estimated five-year period. So, Andy Burnham, the social media expert, maybe not just for young people and maybe not just on social media?
Overall, I think Andy Burnham is doing an incredible job, especially considering he's only been in Number 10 for a month and we are already seeing positive impacts of his work. I hope you've managed to learn something new about Burnham and his policies or his work on social media. Thanks for reading!
